Visual and literary arts to foster creativity and break stigmas
“Art allows us to creatively shape experience from the language of feelings”
What are they?
The XarxArt Awards are a visual arts (painting and drawing), poetry, and narrative contest, promoted by the Catalan Mental Health Congress Foundation. They are aimed at people receiving care in public mental health services and seek to foster creativity, give voice to artistic expression, and help break down stigmas.
Art as a tool for empowerment and social transformation
How does it work?
Point by point:
- Open call: individuals linked to the public mental health network of Catalonia may participate.
- Categories and recognition: each edition rewards works of painting, drawing, poetry, and narrative that stand out for their originality and expressiveness.
- Traveling exhibition: the award-winning and selected works will be exhibited in various municipalities and cultural spaces.
- Complementary activities: workshops, debates, and talks that connect art, health, and community.
History and Impact
For more than 25 years, the Xarxart Awards have been a space for recognizing and giving visibility to art created by people with firsthand experience in mental health.
- Eight editions held.
- Hundreds of participants and works presented.
- Exhibitions in numerous municipalities in Catalonia.
- With each edition, the award helps to make visible the diversity and creative richness of a group that is often invisible.

Image Gallery
Through artistic performance, individuals with emotional difficulties or mental health issues can find genuine forms of expression that help channel their discomfort or suffering, which is referred to as therapeutic effects. We present a series of photographs that bear witness to the inaugurations of the Xarxart Award Traveling Exhibition in various municipalities of Catalonia.

Oscar Moya
2nd Xarxart Award
3rd edition of the Catalan Mental Health Congress

His mother's vinyl record covers were his first canvases, on them he began to practice what would later become his passion. In the 80s, he went through a stage of refinement, where he felt like a robot wanting to improve and practice with each drawing. He learned different techniques, some of which his father taught him. Today, he primarily uses charcoal, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic.

1st Xarxart Prize
4th edition of the Catalan Mental Health Congress
Graduated in painting from the Faculty of Sant Jordi in Barcelona. I am 51 years old. A few years ago I won first prize in the congress competition. Given that I am colorblind, I work exclusively with shades of white, gray, and black.
Francesc de Diego
1st Xarxart Prize
5th edition of the Catalan Mental Health Congress

Graphic artist born in April 1978. De Diego has been illustrating for more than two decades, an activity driven primarily by the fact that it is his main form of expression. Poster designs, illustration exhibitions, and a large number of shows demonstrate his work. In 2013 he won the Xarxart prize and was a member of the jury in its latest edition, in 2017. “Esquizofrenia Gráfica” (self-published, 2009) is his main published work, and “Nil & Grandpha, una historia de rugbi” (CNPN, 2011) is also noteworthy. His latest book is “Trazar el Vacio” (co-published with Terraignota editorial, 2019). In this work he illustrates texts by Princesa Inca, José Manuel Vara, and Cysko Muñoz. De Diego Fuertes has donated part of his work to the Catalan Congress of Mental Health Foundation with the aim of helping the Foundation raise funds in its mission to promote debate and the improvement of mental health in Catalonia.
Cristina Laura Morales – CRISLA
1st Xarxart Prize
6th edition of the Catalan Mental Health Congress
Since I was a little girl, I have felt a strong inclination towards creative painting and the world of the visual arts in general. It is what I truly feel is my life. I am also sensitive to the subject of humanities. I have attended painting classes with teachers holding degrees in fine arts. I am motivated by themes that break with the idea of exclusion.
Urco
Mention 1 Xarxart Award
6th edition of the Catalan Mental Health Congress

Self-taught painter of abstract expressionist style who has evolved towards an intense fragmentation of geometric figures, animals, and characters. Work of vivid colorism and vigorous stroke, capable of transporting the viewer to a fantastic universe full of energy, recurring symbols, and strong emotions (passion, delirium, depth). Without premeditated purposes, my painting resonates with primitivism, romanticism, and magic, as the inner voice of a “wild man” and subversive.
